The judge announces that the hearing will be postponed until May 9.
The question the court in Los Angeles was to address on Thursday and Friday was whether the brothers, who have served over 30 years in prison, have rehabilitated during that time and should be sentenced to a milder punishment.
The former prosecutor in Los Angeles County, George Gascón, has requested that the brothers' sentence be reduced to 50 years with the possibility of parole. However, the brothers' defense attorney Mark Geragos says that he will ask the judge to change the charges to manslaughter, which would allow them to be released immediately.
The brothers were sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole in 1990 for the murder of their parents. Several parallel processes are underway to change the verdict, including the brothers' appeal for clemency to the Governor of California.
The brothers hope that the court will issue a new verdict, taking into account that the murders were committed after years of sexual abuse by their father, and a mother who chose not to intervene.
The case has been revived with the Netflix series "Monster: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez" and the documentary "The Menendez brothers" from last autumn.
