Young people in cities stay with their parents longer than those elsewhere. Women leave home at a younger age than men, Statistics Sweden says in a new report.

The difference is partly due to the fact that women move in with a partner earlier than men do - and start studying earlier. The average age for women to move in is just under 22 years old, while men leave their parental home just before they turn 23.

Those who move away from home last are city dwellers and those who live in the suburbs of large cities, according to the report.

"This can be linked to differences in the supply of housing, but also to the fact that city dwellers are often closer to universities and colleges than people in many other municipalities," says Statistics Sweden's demographer Filip Dabergott in a press release.

The report is based on data from the years 2014 - 2024.
