The men – a Georgian and a foreign citizen – were arrested in the port city of Batumi in connection with the intended sale. They wanted the equivalent of just over 29 million kronor for the uranium, according to Georgia's security service.
The radioactive uranium was enriched to the degree that it could be used "to manufacture explosive devices or carry out terrorist attacks", according to the security service. Had this been done, it could have killed a large number of people, according to reports.
The men risk up to ten years in prison each for trading in nuclear energy materials.
Experts have for years warned that extremist groups can easily get hold of unsecured radioactive material from countries in the former Soviet Union.
Georgia and the neighboring country Armenia – both former Soviet states – have reported multiple cases of attempts to sell radioactive substances, including smuggling attempts of highly enriched uranium.
