"Regarding the information about material involving abuse, it is of course terrible if it turns out to be true," the Sweden Democrats' press department writes to TT.

"As a party, we can only take into account the information that is currently available about this and do our best to understand it in depth. For this reason, our membership committee has started an investigation into this person, and he has been suspended from membership while it is ongoing."

“Leaving for personal reasons”

When asked whether the suspended person is also being investigated for a crime by the police, the press department referred to answers that SD's group leader Linda Lindberg gave earlier on Tuesday - when she did not want to confirm that the criminal suspicions relate to the member of parliament who left his duties and was then suspended.

"We have just recently been informed that the member wishes to leave for personal reasons. We had a conversation late yesterday," she said at a press conference.

Released after questioning

Swedish police are said to have become aware of the suspected crimes after the American organization NCMEC came forward with a tip, SVT writes. SVT first reported on the suspected crime. The organization, which works to combat the sexual exploitation of children globally, sends thousands of tips to Swedish police every year.

"I have no comments, other than that one person has been questioned. The person has been released but the suspicions remain," prosecutor Lena Körner of the Special Prosecution Chamber told TT.

SVT states that a search of the MP's home has been conducted and that several electronic devices have been seized.
