Doctor Salvadore Placensica – who was found guilty of prescribing large amounts of the narcotic drug ketamine to “Friends” actor Matthew Perry – has been sentenced to 2.5 years in prison, reports the BBC, among others.

Perry died on October 28, 2023, according to the autopsy report due to the ketamine.

Five people have been charged following his death, and Placensica is the first to face sentencing. The doctor has admitted to illegally prescribing the drug to the actor, who had previously been taking it for depression.

When his regular doctor said no, Perry turned to Placensica instead, who prescribed the drug despite knowing about Perry's addiction problems. According to the indictment, he also sent a text message to another doctor describing Perry as "an idiot" who could be made money off of.

The prosecutor had requested three years in prison, while Placensica's defense attorney argued that prison was not necessary because the doctor had already been severely punished: even before the verdict, Placensica had lost his medical license, his clinic, and his career.
