It was in the second period that Boston's Justin Brazeau crashed into the goal, which caused Markström to hit himself hard against one of the goalposts.
Markström's left leg looked like it was twisted when it got stuck in the post.
The 34-year-old Swede lay face down on the ice with obvious pain after the collision, but was able to leave the ice on his own after a while.
"In good spirits"
Head coach Sheldon Keefe announces that Markström "will be out for a while" and that they will get a better understanding of his status soon.
I've talked to him and he's in good spirits. He told me he's feeling much better now than earlier. It's positive, but he will be out for a while, says Keefe to reporters after the match.
If it turns out to be long-term, Sweden's goalie lineup in the NHL's Four Nations tournament in February may be in danger, since Linus Ullmark also has injury problems and hasn't played since December 22.
If neither Markström nor Ullmark can play the star tournament, Philadelphia's Samuel Ersson and Chicago's Arvid Söderblom are the most likely replacements. Possibly, Ottawa's Anton Forsberg could also be backup to Minnesota's Filip Gustavsson.
Kempe goal-scorer – again
Markström did not return to the bench for the rest of the match. He was replaced by goalie colleague Jake Allen. New Jersey won the meeting with 5–1.
Brazeau was ejected for interference after the collision.
With 6.48 minutes left of the match, Adrian Kempe scored the winning goal – 2–1 – for Los Angeles at home against Florida. It was Kempe's 24th goal of the season – and his fourth consecutive match with a goal.
Additionally:
For the 30th time in his career, Kempe scored a match-winning goal.
David Gustafsson notched an assist when Winnipeg won 3–2 after overtime away against Colorado.
