The US and Iran have agreed on several issues, according to State Department spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei.
But to say that this means that the signing of an agreement is imminent - no one can claim that, he says.
Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has come under Iranian control since the outbreak of war. Now the spokesman announces that the country is charging fees for "navigation services" on ships passing through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, AFP reports.
The services provided - navigation services in addition to the measures necessary to protect the environment in the Strait of Hormuz, the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman - require the collection of certain fees.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Friday, during his visit to Sweden, that "someone has to do something about it" if Iran does not open the Strait of Hormuz.
Negotiations with Oman
The burning issue of the strait's management is being resolved through ongoing negotiations between Iran and Oman, Hossein Noushabadi of the Iranian Foreign Ministry said in an interview with the Iranian news agency Isna.
According to the Tasnim news agency, Esmaeil Baqaei emphasizes that it is not about tariffs and points out the need to use the correct terminology.
He calls Iran and Oman's work a responsible measure and says it is natural that the services provided entail costs.
Esmaeil Baqaei states that the issue of Iran's nuclear program - a major stumbling block for Washington - will be discussed only after the parties agree on a framework.
According to him, the framework being drafted is "aimed at ending the war" throughout the region, including in Lebanon.
Meeting with Xi
Pakistan's army chief Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif are in China for talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, state media reports. The visit is part of the negotiation effort to end the Iran war.
US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that an agreement between the countries was "largely" finalized. The following day, he said negotiators should not "rush into a deal." On Monday, the president wrote on Truth Social that it would either be a "good and meaningful" deal or "no deal."
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said earlier on Monday that he did not rule out that a deal with Iran could be finalized during the day.
"We have, in my opinion, a pretty robust case on the table in terms of their ability to open the strait," he told reporters during a visit to India.
