The bodyguard claimed in court that he had not had contact with one of the doctors who is charged in the case, but the investigation has shown several SMS messages between the two, both before and after Maradona's death.
When the bodyguard testified, he was interrupted by the prosecutors several times. He was accused of making "contradictions" and the prosecutors demanded that he be arrested for perjury. The judge agreed and the bodyguard was led out of the courtroom in Buenos Aires suburb San Isidro in handcuffs.
Diego Maradona passed away on November 25, 2020. The 60-year-old was under medical care after a brain operation for a blood clot when he suddenly suffered a heart attack. He was found dead in a villa in Dique Luján outside the capital, where he was being cared for after being discharged from the hospital two weeks earlier.
Maradona's family claims to have evidence that his life could have been saved. Seven doctors are charged with suspected crimes in connection with his care in the final stages of his life. In the event of a guilty verdict, they risk between 8 and 25 years in prison. All of them deny any wrongdoing.
Nearly 120 people are expected to testify during the trial, which is expected to continue until July.
