For four of the injured, the situation is critical, reports the Ritzau news agency, citing the Capital Region.

Four of them are unfortunately critically injured, and they have been transported from the scene of the accident to a trauma center. Twelve with minor injuries have been partially airlifted from the scene of the accident, says emergency manager Tim Ole Simonsen to TV2.

The cause of the accident has not been determined. Tim Ole Simonsen tells Ekstra Bladet that the police and a crash investigation commission will determine what happened.

A press conference that was announced this morning has been canceled, the police at the scene announced, citing that the authorities are still trying to get an overview of the situation.

“Violent”

Pictures show two partially crushed passenger trains that have collided head-on in the middle of morning traffic. According to a reporter on the scene, it looks "violent."

"What we know is that two trains have collided head-on," says emergency manager Martin Schmidt to Ekstra Bladet.

Police told BT that the accident is considered "serious." According to Danish TV2, it occurred at a relatively high speed. Police, rescue services and the fire department are on site, and a rescue helicopter has been seen leaving the scene.

Sweden has offered help, says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

"I have heard from Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen this morning and offered Swedish help in handling the tragic train accident," he writes in a comment to TT.

“Deeply shaken”

Some of the injured have been flown to Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen, says Gribskov Municipality Mayor Trine Egetved.

"I am deeply shaken and shocked. The local train is used by many Gribskov residents, employees and school students," she writes on Facebook.

Thursday morning's accident occurred around 6:30 a.m. near Kagerup in northern Zealand, approximately thirty kilometers north of Copenhagen.

According to BT, the trains traveled along the Gribskovbanen railway between Hillerød and Gilleleje.

Hillerød Municipality has established a crisis center for those affected by the accident.
