Hachette Book Group, Cengage Learning and Elsevier - as well as author Scott Turow - allege that Google illegally used millions of books for services such as Google Books, Google Play Books and Google Scholar.
"One of the most extensive infringements of copyrighted material in history," the lawsuit states.
The case is the latest in a growing wave of copyright litigation surrounding generative AI. Authors and publishers have previously sued Google, OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta, among others. Meta recently won a high-profile case, while Anthropic has settled and agreed to pay approximately SEK 14.4 billion to authors.
