Maja Stark Climbs to World No. 6 After Historic US Open Win

Maja Stark is the new world number six in golf after the US Open title. The 25-year-old has not even had time to read the nearly 80 text messages and hundreds of messages she received after the victory. I haven't even started dealing with it, she says.

The night against Monday Swedish time, Maja Stark made history as the first Swede in 19 years, since Annika Sörenstam in 2006, to win the women's most prestigious golf major, the US Open.

In the afternoon, the 25-year-old met with Swedish media on a digital press conference and told that she had time to celebrate yet. There has been focus on handling media and packing for the weekend's LPGA tour event in Galloway, New Jersey.

I think we'll celebrate tonight instead. We'll be staying on the course before the tournament now. There will probably be many players to celebrate with anyway, says Maja Stark.

When the world ranking was released the day after the US Open, Stark had risen 27 places, from 33rd to sixth place. She defines the victory as enormous but has difficulty answering how big an impact her first major will have on her career.

Sörenstam called

I don't know how this will land. I'm focused on doing as well as possible on the next tournament. I'm still in "job mode".

The messages have been pouring in after the historic victory on the Erin Hills course in Wisconsin, where she won by two strokes ahead of the duo Rio Takeda, Japan, and world number one Nelly Korda, USA. Stark estimates that she has received around 70-80 SMS and hundreds of posts on Instagram and Messenger.

Legend Annika Sörenstam got in touch in a video call directly after the victory, something that the US Open published on social media.

Annika called after the round and said congratulations. She's on vacation in Alaska and said she tried to follow the leaderboard and find networks up in the mountains. It was great to hear from her>

Stark doesn't know if men's world number eight Ludvig Åberg has gotten in touch.

"Never do that"

I haven't checked through all the messages so I don't know if Ludvig has sent anything.

She also doesn't know how she will spend the victory check of approximately 23 million kronor. It's current to move from the one-bedroom apartment she lives in right now.

It won't be 23 million kronor. It will be significantly less after taxes and paying caddies and so on. I always tell myself that I'll treat myself when I win something. But I never do that. I'm pretty satisfied with what I have. I don't want to get too comfortable either, says Stark.
