It is of the utmost importance for international trade, and for the flow of oil and gas, which must be able to leave the region, Macron said during a visit to Cyprus.
Macron says it is a support mission in which ships will be escorted so that the Strait of Hormuz can gradually reopen “once the most intense phase of the conflict has subsided.” The mission will be carried out by both European and non-European countries.
About a fifth of the world's oil and natural gas normally passes through the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf. But the war involving Iran has meant that shipping traffic through the strait has virtually come to a halt for almost ten days.
