The deal is valued at $5 billion, equivalent to approximately SEK 45 billion, according to a press release from Lyten. The company announced the deal in August and since then, completion has been delayed.

Lyten's plan is to start delivering battery cells in the second half of 2026.

The restart process will take some time, Lyten's marketing manager Keith Norman tells TT.

According to the company, it wants to expand its customer base and not just focus on the automotive industry. For example, it has contact with companies involved in energy storage.

"We believe that a broader customer base will enable us to launch battery cells faster," says Keith Norman.

Employing hundreds

Based on customer demand, Lyten plans to hire approximately 600 additional people over the next twelve months, company management writes.

We encourage former employees to apply for these positions to bring back that expertise. Unfortunately, much expertise had to leave due to the bankruptcy.

When the company filed for bankruptcy in March 2025, Northvolt had approximately 5,000 employees.

Skellefteå has lost many residents in the past year, says the municipality's business director Anja Palm.

"We have experienced strong fluctuations in recent years. I believe this will be a turning point and that we will now be able to return to a growth curve," she says.

“Attractive place”

IF Metall's union chairman Marie Nilsson describes the news as gratifying and states that a collective agreement has already been signed.

"It is particularly important for IF Metall's members who have worked in the factory, and who can now get a new chance to contribute their expertise," she writes in a comment.

At the same time, it is clear that EdgeConneX, a global data center developer, will establish a data center on the factory site in close collaboration with Lyten. This means another large-scale establishment in Skellefteå, the municipality writes.

This is not only an attractive location for battery manufacturing but also for other businesses, including data centers, says Keith Norman.
