The verdict against Brazil's former president Jair Bolsonaro is no "witch hunt", writes Lula da Silva about his predecessor in a first statement – directed at Donald Trump.

Brazil's president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva writes in a column in the American The New York Times that he is "proud" of the Supreme Court's verdict, which "secures our institutions and the democratic rule of law principles".

In his text, Lula writes that the trial is not a "witch hunt" as the US President Donald Trump, also Bolsonaro's ally, has called it. The column is directly addressed to Trump, where Lula, among other things, raises the increased tariffs against Brazil, which he calls "not only misguided but also illogical" considering the US trade surplus with Brazil.

Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced on Friday to 27 years and three months in prison for coup attempt after four out of five judges voted for a guilty verdict. Bolsonaro was sentenced for planning a coup against the left-leaning Lula when the right-wing leader lost the election in October 2022.
