Lisbon Cable Car Accident: Victims Identified, Three-Year-Old Survives

Eleven of the sixteen fatalities in Wednesday's cable car accident in Lisbon were foreign nationals. Among the survivors is a three-year-old German boy.

All the fatalities have been identified, the Portuguese police state in a statement on Friday afternoon. It concerns three Britons, two Canadians, two South Koreans, one American, one Frenchman, one Swiss, and one Ukrainian. The remaining five deceased were Portuguese.

A report that a German man – who is the father of the three-year-old – was killed has been corrected. The man has been found among the injured at the hospital.

A total of 20 people were injured.

The cause of the accident is unknown. But the police, prosecutor, and transport authorities are investigating why one of the Glória funicular's cars suddenly ran amok and crashed at the square below.

An initial statement about the cause of the accident was to be made on Friday, but on Friday evening, the authorities announced that it will be delayed until Saturday afternoon.

A more detailed preliminary accident report is expected in about 45 days.
