It's not easy to become the all-time leading scorer in the World Cup. Messi made it difficult for himself.

Argentina were awarded a penalty against Austria in the ninth minute after a VAR review. Referee Amin Omar looked at the TV screen and determined that Lautaro Martinez had been fouled.

Messi stepped forward - and shot wide.

He still set a record - a less flattering one. He is now also the first to have missed three penalties in the World Cup.

The match is in progress.

17 goals: Lionel Messi, Argentina.

16 goals: Miroslav Klose, Germany.

15 goals: Ronaldo, Brazil.

14 goals: Kylian Mbappé, France and Gerd Müller, West Germany.

13 goals: Just Fontaine, France.

12 goals: Pelé, Brazil.

11 goals: Jürgen Klinsmann, West Germany/Germany.

10 goals: Sándor Kocsis, Hungary, Gabriel Batistuta, Argentina, Gary Lineker, England, Harry Kane, England, Teófilo Cubillas, Peru.
