Malm, who is a lecturer in human ecology at Lund University, calls himself a proud Leninist – but an anti-Stalinist – and sees it as an honor to receive a prize in the name of the first Soviet leader, writes Hallands Nyheter.
"The human ecologist, Marxist and activist Andreas Malm has, with his life at stake in the era of racism, imperialist wars, the Palestinian genocide and climate catastrophes, with his burning intellectual courage and uncompromising integrity, become a completely crucial Swedish voice out in the world", reads part of the motivation.
Among 47-year-old Andreas Malm's books are "If nothing is done now, it will be too late", "The development of the storm" and "How to blow up a pipeline".
The prize is awarded by hotel owner Lasse Diding to an author or artist who "operates in a socially critical and rebellious left-wing tradition". The award ceremony takes place at Varbergs teater on November 15.
Among previous winners are Jan Guillou, Maj Sjöwall, Mikael Wiehe, Nina Björk and Karl Ove Knausgård.
