V wants to see a “new national housing policy for lower rents.” The goal is for 20,000 new rental apartments to be built per year under the party's policy, and for rents to suit low- and middle-income earners.

For many, many years, Sweden has not managed to match housing construction with the great need that exists.

What has been built in the last 20 to 30 years has also been far too expensive, says V leader Nooshi Dadgostar at a press conference.

Part of the proposal is that housing construction should not be based on the price of land, but on the initial rent that low- and middle-income earners can pay. According to the V proposal, the rent should be determined in advance based on “local conditions”. Land costs should then be adjusted accordingly and municipalities should be compensated for any reduced costs.

It is based on the ability to pay and not on the highest desired profit for the real estate industry, says economic policy spokesperson Ida Gabrielsson.

The idea is then that companies that want to can bid on the construction project.

V also wants the state to take overall responsibility for housing planning and review housing needs every year.

The Left Party also proposes that construction companies should have access to government credit guarantees to finance their construction projects. According to the Left Party, the proposal is possible because the EU has relaxed its state aid rules for national housing construction.
