70-year-old Lars Adaktusson is in third place on the parliamentary list for the Christian Democrats in Jönköping County, which was announced over the weekend. However, he does not want to speculate on his chances of entering parliament in next year's elections.
In a debate article in Svenska Dagbladet in 2021, Adaktusson argued that the Christian Democrats could not form a government with the Sweden Democrats. However, he has now changed his mind on the issue.
"I think it is democratically correct to respect the wishes of the voters and cooperate with the parties that are in the Riksdag. The Sweden Democrats are today a large party, and to ignore that and not be able to settle on substantive political issues, not be able to cooperate, I think is completely counterproductive," he tells P4 Jönköping.
Adaktusson was previously the foreign policy spokesperson for the Christian Democratic Party (KD). He left this position a few years ago, citing a lack of a “trusting relationship” with the party leadership.
In 2019, he also left the party board after a conflict over how he voted on the abortion issue in the EU Parliament. The reason he is now making a comeback, he says, is that after a discussion with the party leadership, he has decided that “it would be very fun to get involved again for the Christian Democrats and to try to contribute to a really good election result next year.”
