The man had worked as a bus driver for 29 years when he was filmed by a security camera in 2022 stealing 1,000 yen, equivalent to approximately 70 kronor.

At the time, five passengers boarded the bus and were to pay a total of 1,150 yen for the trip. The driver allegedly told the group to put 150 yen in a coin box and then accepted a 1,000-yen bill, which he failed to report properly, according to the verdict.

The man was fired and sued the city of Kyoto after being denied his pension. In the first instance, he lost the case, but in the second, the court ruled in his favor.

Now, the Supreme Court has ruled in favor of the city in its decision.

According to the verdict, the bus driver had been reprimanded several times for various incidents, including smoking an e-cigarette on duty when no passengers were on board.
