Sweden Delays Decision on Bag Ban Amid Lowered Threat Level

The threat level against Sweden is lowered from four to three – from a high threat to an elevated threat, Säpo announced on Friday morning.

Whether this means that the ban on bags at larger events will disappear remains to be seen.

We will look into it and other questions, have a dialogue with the Security Police and return with a statement, says Johan Olsson, head of the national operational department (Noa), at a press conference.

Gunnar Strömmer believes that the time with the elevated threat picture has strengthened society.

Sweden has lived with an elevated or high threat for many years now, since 2010. We have over a long period strengthened our capabilities and strengthened our efforts continue with undiminished force, he says at the press conference.

The Minister of Justice points out several parallel threats against Sweden's internal security – terrorism, state actors, and organized crime.

We have also seen spectacular examples of how the different threats are intertwined in recent years.

The announcement is welcomed by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, who at the same time emphasizes that the work to make Sweden safe and secure must continue with full force.

"It is good that Säpo can now make the assessment that the terrorist threat against Sweden has decreased. The measures taken by many actors in society have yielded results. But we are still in a serious security situation. There is nothing more important to me than Sweden's and the Swedes' security and the work to make Sweden safer continues", he says in a written comment to TT.
