A federal judge in Texas has halted the immediate deportation of five-year-old Liam Ramos and his father, who were arrested last week by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), The Guardian reports.

According to the ruling, the father and son may not be transferred from the Texas detention center where they are being held while their trial is ongoing.

Five-year-old Ramos had just returned home from preschool when he and his father were arrested in the driveway of the family's house in the Minneapolis area.

The arrest of the boy received widespread attention and sparked anger among protesters in the already widespread demonstrations against ICE in the United States.

The demonstrations erupted after the mother of three, Renee Nicole Good, a US citizen, was shot dead by an ICE agent on January 7. Since then, another fatal shooting occurred when federal border police officers fired shots at 37-year-old Alex Pretti on Saturday.
