Khalil has been deprived of liberty since March 8 without being accused of a crime. President Donald Trump's government wants to deport him for his participation in pro-Palestinian demonstrations at Columbia University in New York.
Judge Michael Farbiarz in a federal court in the state of New Jersey has already previously ruled that Khalil should be released, but he gave the US government a deadline to appeal the decision by Friday. The judge set a bail of one dollar, equivalent to just under ten kronor, which Khalil has paid.
The court believes that the deprivation of liberty violates the country's constitution. After being accused of possibly having a detrimental impact on US foreign policy – which was rejected by the judge – the US chose to accuse Khalil of not having answered correctly in his application for a residence permit in the US.
Khalil is not accused of direct crimes in connection with the protests at Columbia University in New York.
