The reigning German champions Ludwigsburg announced at the end of July that the club had major financial problems. Just a week later, all players were free to leave and the team withdrew from the series. For Johanna Bundsen, it meant a quick hunt for a new club address.
Then you would suddenly find a new solution that would suit the family, that's where my thoughts have been. My priority is that my daughter will be fine, that it will work out family-wise, and there has been an uncertainty, she says.
”Not sitting on any answer”
Ludwigsburg is the third major European club in just over a year to go bankrupt. Previously, Norwegian Vipers and French Nantes have been forced to discontinue their elite operations.
It's sad for women's handball that it's like that, but I'm not sitting on any answer to why it's become like that, says Bundsen.
Despite the stress, the club team situation was resolved. Bundsen now plays for French Metz, last year's Champions League fourth place.
It's very fun that the game is on. For my part, I feel that it's been okay, but I feel that there's more to give.
Want to play for medals
The next task for Bundsen will be with the Swedish national team. Later today (Saturday) a training match against Hungary awaits. After that, the preparations continue with the European Championship qualification in October and finally the hunt for the World Championship medals in November-December.
We would like to play for the medals. We are very secure in the group and know each other well, she says.
We keep working and hope that we can make it happen.
The training match against Hungary kicks off at 4:00 PM.
