The 51-year-old former goalkeeper star has written a three-year contract with Leksand.
"This club has meant incredibly much to me, both in terms of my hockey career and as a person", says Hedberg according to a press release.
The former NHL and national team goalkeeper has Leksand as his parent club and it will be his second attempt to establish himself as head coach in SHL.
Hedberg trained Örebro last season, but was fired after half a season.
Last season, he was assistant coach in Färjestad.
Hedberg comes to a Leksand that is struggling with economic problems and will have to cut the player budget for next season.
This season, Leksand missed the playoffs after a poor finish to the season. Johan Hedberg succeeds "Challe" Berglund, who chose to step down when his contract expired.
Sports manager Thomas Johansson on the recruitment of Hedberg:
"First and foremost, Johan represents a lot of energy and clear leadership, while radiating a human warmth. Johan's leadership and experience from ice hockey around the world will mean a lot to us."
