Bratt played his 499th match in the NHL career and started by scoring 1-0 after just over a minute of play.
In the second period, the 26-year-old from Stockholm was credited with no less than three assists. Bratt thus has 35 points (12 goals and 23 assists) and is fifth in the scoring league, three behind leading Kirill Kaprizov, Minnesota.
New York Rangers desperately tried to break through New Jersey's defense, but Swedish goalkeeper Jacob Markström stood in the way, saving 38 of 39 shots.
The match would have looked very different, especially in the first period, without some of the saves. Fantastic play from him, says Bratt to reporters after the match.
Blocked 27 shots
Markström, Bratt, and teammate Jack Hughes were named the league's three stars of the match.
"Marky" was our best player tonight and kept us in the game, says Hughes, according to nhl.com.
Markström praised the defenders who blocked a total of 27 shots.
The penalty kill blocked ten shots. And it wasn't on any sneaky shots from the blue line, but direct shots from (Mika) Zibanejad, (Adam) Fox, and (Artemij) Panarin, says Markström according to NHL.
"Perfect timing"
He tells that Brett Pesce saved by blocking with his foot and Erik Haula by stretching out his hand.
I tried to tell them that I have better equipment for that. We haven't been satisfied with how we've defended lately, including myself, I haven't been good enough. So this was a big win, perfect timing to get it in this match, says Markström.
New Jersey leads the Eastern Conference with 36 points.
