Andersson received the news shortly before the World Cup in Russia that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Andersson had taken the national team to the championship just over six months earlier after a dramatic playoff against Italy.
The success continued during the World Cup. The national team advanced from the group stage, beating Switzerland in the round of 16 before falling to England in the quarter-finals.
At the same time, Andersson was secretly fighting prostate cancer. He now tells Carina Bergfeldt, SVT.
At the beginning of the year, when we were out on the January tour, the national team doctor, Anders Wallentin, and I were out taking one of our many morning walks, and I had to stop and pee a couple of times. Then he said: "We'll check that out somehow," says Andersson and continues:
And I got the results from the ultrasound on the same day we gathered with the players and managers for the World Cup. And it showed that I had prostate cancer.
Andersson talks emotionally about the operation.
There are so many people who have suffered worse things than I have. But it's clear that when you're rolled onto that bed and there are lights and machines and people all around you... Then you're not cocky.
