For the first time in ten years, Jamaica has taken a World Championship gold on 100 meters on the men's side.
Oblique Seville won the final in Tokyo in 9.77 seconds and was five hundredths ahead of his compatriot and silver medalist Kishane Thompson. The reigning world champion Noah Lyles, USA, took the bronze in 9.89.
Seville thus took Jamaica's first gold on the distance since Usain Bolt's victory in Beijing 2015. The sprint legend watched Saturday's competition from the stands and cracked a smile over the Jamaican double medal.
On the women's side, Melissa Jefferson-Wooden took gold after a giant run. The American's 10.61 was a new championship record and the equal third fastest time ever.
Tina Clayton, Jamaica, took silver in 10.76 and Julien Alfred, Saint Lucia, bronze in 10.94.
