Israel has imprisoned thousands of Palestinians with suspected Hamas connections since the war in Gaza began after Hamas' bloody attack on October 7, 2023.
Many have been released after being deprived of their freedom for months without being formally charged, and human rights groups have documented widespread violence, both physical and psychological. The prisoners have also not received enough food and in March this year, a 17-year-old died in a prison, due to malnutrition, according to doctors.
Sunday's ruling by the Supreme Court states that the state must provide the prisoners with enough food to meet the minimum existence. The court writes that it "genuinely doubts" that the prisoners are eating properly and orders the prisons to take measures to ensure that access to food meets the minimum requirements.
The far-right Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who is ultimately responsible for the country's prisons, quickly responded to the ruling and claims that the Supreme Court is disgracing Israel and that the judges are defending Hamas.
