Israeli fighter jets have struck military targets in, among other places, the ports of Hodeidah, Ras Isa and Salif. A power plant has also been attacked, according to the Israeli military. The attacks have been confirmed by Houthi-controlled media.
Among the targets that have been attacked is the commercial cargo ship Galaxy Leader, which was hijacked by the Houthi movement in November 2023.
"Houthi forces had installed a radar system on the ship and had used it to track ships on the international shipping lane to facilitate further terrorist activities," Israel's military writes in its statement.
The attacks constitute a response to the Houthi movement's repeated rocket and drone attacks against Israel, Israel's military writes in a statement.
A few hours later, an air raid warning was issued in Israel and, according to the country's military, two incoming rockets that were fired from Yemen were detected during the night. It is unclear whether the projectiles were shot down.
Earlier on Sunday, a merchant ship was attacked in the Red Sea southwest of Hodeidah. The ship is taking in water and the crew is in the process of leaving it, according to the British organization UKMTO, which monitors shipping.
The Houthi movement has attacked merchant ships in the area after the Gaza war broke out, but Sunday's attack is the first serious one against a ship in the area in a while.
The private maritime security company Ambrey has issued a warning. According to Ambrey, the incident may mark a greater escalation. The US military stated on Sunday that it is aware of the attack.
