"The facility housed the headquarters of all Iranian security organizations," the military wrote in a statement on social media on Wednesday afternoon.

Management functions for Iran's Revolutionary Guard, the elite Quds Force, the Basij militia, intelligence services and cyber warfare are said to have been located in the facility in eastern Tehran.

President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that the United States is now in a "very strong position" in the war against Iran.

"Their leadership is disappearing quickly. Anyone who seems to want to be a leader, they die," Trump said at a meeting at the White House, referring to the many Iranian leaders who have been killed, according to the United States.

"They're finished"

US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth stated that attacks on Iran should be escalated.

"They are fucked and they know it," he said of Iran's regime at a press conference.

More and bigger waves are coming. We've just begun.

Hegseth also confirmed that a US submarine fired the torpedo that sank the Iranian warship IRIS Dena off Sri Lanka on Wednesday. The remains of more than 80 crew members have been recovered, according to Sri Lankan authorities.

The top US military commander, Dan Caine, said that Iran's ability to launch missiles has been drastically reduced. The goal, after establishing control over Iranian airspace, is to "begin expanding inland," according to Caine.

There were also signals from Israel that the immediate threat from Iran was considered to have diminished. The Israeli military announced that certain restrictions for the public would be eased as of noon on Thursday.

Iranian counterattacks

Iran's Revolutionary Guard, in turn, threatens the "complete destruction" of the region's military and economic infrastructure while counterattacks are underway against Israel, American targets and Western-friendly countries in the region.

An Iranian missile was shot down by NATO units in the eastern Mediterranean before it reached Turkish airspace.

According to the UN refugee agency UNHCR, around 100,000 residents of Tehran fled the capital in the first two days of the war. However, there has been no increase in the number of Iranians trying to leave the country.

In total, more than 1,000 civilians have been killed and over 5,400 injured in Iran, according to the US-based activist group Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA).

Since the start of the war, around 2,000 targets in Iran have been hit, according to the United States.

Background: How the Iran War Started

On February 28, the United States and Israel attacked Iran, without the support of the UN Security Council. The attack was described as a preemptive strike to prevent the country from developing nuclear weapons. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several other leaders were killed in the bombings.

A year earlier, in March 2025, US President Donald Trump sent a letter to the Ayatollah to initiate negotiations over Iran's suspected nuclear weapons program. Five meetings were held but without any results.

On June 22, the United States entered the then-ongoing war between Israel and Iran and bombed three nuclear energy facilities.

In September, previous UN sanctions on Iran were reimposed. The economy deteriorated and popular protests erupted before the turn of the year. Trump said he was prepared to intervene on the side of the protesters when they were killed in their thousands - but that did not happen.

In early 2026, US military forces gathered in Iran's vicinity.

New negotiations with the regime began on February 3, without results.
