The 27-year-old man, who has ties to the terrorist group IS, killed three people at a city festival in the West German city in August 2024.
The prosecutors note that he targeted "non-believers" because he saw them as representatives of Western society. IS, which claimed responsibility for the act, described it as a revenge for dead Muslims "in Palestine and everywhere".
The man has admitted to the act during the trial, which was held in Düsseldorf under large security measures.
Three people died because of me. I seriously injured others, he said during the proceedings.
Some survived by pure luck. They could have died too. I deserve, and expect, a life sentence.
The attack in Solingen received great attention in Germany, and led, among other things, to stricter gun laws and an infected political debate about asylum reception from Syria.
