With a vote of 92-78, the government avoided resignation.

Martin defended the government's proposed tax breaks to tackle the soaring fuel prices resulting from the Iran war, saying they are among the largest in Europe.

The basic claim that we do nothing and are more lax than other countries is simply not true, he said.

The vote of confidence took place at Martin's initiative in response to a motion of no confidence called by the opposition - led by the left-wing nationalist Sinn Féin - which has criticised the government for not doing enough.

The country is being shaken by protests where demonstrators in heavy vehicles are blocking roads and even oil and fuel facilities.
