Suddenly, the Shah's son, Reza Pahlavi, appeared on Iran's state television broadcasts. Unknown hackers broke into the otherwise heavily censored channels and broadcast opposition messages.

Clips circulating online show that several channels of Irib, Iran's state radio and television monopoly, on Sunday evening aired the opposition's message. Two segments featured Pahlavi, who is being touted by some as a possible transitional leader for Iran. Then sequences showed police officers who were said to have "laid down their weapons and sworn allegiance to the people."

Pahlavi has previously claimed from exile that thousands of police and soldiers have stopped fighting the popular protests in Iran, and promised instead to support the opposition against hardline Islamist rule.

The message to the security forces was: "Do not point your weapons at the people."

The pro-regime news agency Fars has confirmed that the television signal was hijacked "from an unknown source."
