Ahmadreza Djalali was struck by a heart attack and was transferred to the hospital section of Evin Prison in Tehran, according to his wife Vida Mehrannia and his lawyer Nima Rostami.

In a post on X on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi writes that "despite the severity of the convicted person's crimes, he, like other prisoners, has access to healthcare", reports news agency AFP.

However, it is not clear what kind of healthcare is involved.

Djalali's wife Vida Mehrannia, who spoke with her husband on Friday morning, has told TT that her husband was informed at the clinic that there was no cardiologist available until Sunday since it is a weekend in Iran.

Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard (M) wrote on X on Friday evening that she had spoken with Iran's Foreign Minister during the evening.

"During the conversation, I demanded that Ahmadreza Djalali immediately must receive the specialized care he is in need of".

She wrote further that Djalali "must be released on humanitarian grounds so that he can be reunited with his family."

Djalali was arrested in Iran in 2016 and is sentenced to death accused of espionage. He became a Swedish citizen in 2018.
