The eight high-rise buildings in Wang Fuk Court were under renovation when the fire broke out last week. The fire, which took two days to put out, is said to have started in safety netting surrounding the scaffolding around the buildings.
Authorities have previously reported that several irregularities were discovered in the networks and that those responsible are suspected of having skimped on profits. 13 people have been arrested by police and another twelve by anti-corruption authorities, according to John Lee.
On Tuesday, the confirmed death toll rose to 156, the South China Morning Post reports. Police do not rule out that the number could rise further – according to the paper, around 40 people are still missing.
Since the fire was extinguished on Friday, several hundred identification specialists have gone door to door in the burned-out buildings to search for remains.
