The Ukrainian government has “agreed to a peace deal” brokered by the Trump administration, a US official told CBS News .
The unnamed source and Ukrainian delegate Rustem Umerov reportedly have a common understanding of a proposal, but the details are still not clear.
Ukraine's other allies, some 30 countries that are part of the "coalition of the willing", will hold a meeting via link on Tuesday.
US Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll is currently in Abu Dhabi to meet with a Ukrainian and a Russian delegation.
According to Driscoll's spokesman Jeff Tolbert, the talks are going well and the US is optimistic about achieving success in the talks.
- Late Monday and throughout Tuesday, Minister Driscoll and his team held talks with the Russian delegation to achieve a sustainable peace in Ukraine, Tolbert said, according to AFP.
“Huge progress”
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt claims on X that the US has made "tremendous progress toward a peace settlement."
"There are some sensitive, but not insurmountable, details that need to be worked out and that will require further talks between Ukraine, Russia and the United States," Leavitt writes.
The United States and Ukraine met in Switzerland over the weekend. On Monday, they said they had made significant progress and announced a new draft peace settlement that they said clearly affirmed Ukraine's sovereignty. The draft was described as an updated version of what the United States presented last week after private discussions with Russia.
The 28-point plan presented at the time was described by critics as a “Russian wish list.” In particular, Ukraine would effectively give up occupied territories and little else, as well as agree to limit its military capabilities and renounce future military alliances.
Kremlin clearly skeptical
Putin wants legal recognition for what he has stolen, to crush the principle of territorial integrity and sovereignty. That is the main problem, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The draft agreement that the US and Ukraine have drawn up consists of 19 points. It does not mention Russia's occupation of about a fifth of Ukraine. It also does not say anything about how large a defense Ukraine should be allowed to have.
In an initial comment from the Kremlin in Moscow, President Vladimir Putin's close advisor Yuri Ushakov said that they are aware that there is a "European peace plan":
Which at first glance appears completely unconstructive and doesn't work for us.
