ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Claude. As more and more chatbots have been launched, Swedes' use of the services has also increased.
According to the latest SOM survey from the University of Gothenburg, the proportion of people who chat with an AI bot weekly increased from 12 to 36 percent between 2024 and 2025.
But many Swedes still have serious concerns about AI.
"Trust and usage do not have to go hand in hand. It is not a new phenomenon," says Annika Bergström, professor at the Department of Journalism, Media and Communication at the University of Gothenburg.
However, skepticism towards AI has increased rather than decreased since ChatGPT's breakthrough in 2022, according to the survey.
For example, 62 percent of Swedes believe that AI is a greater risk than an opportunity for society (compared to 54 percent in 2023 and 61 percent in 2024).
Additionally, 54 percent of Swedes are “very worried” that false AI-generated information will influence democratic elections. In last year’s survey, the corresponding figure was 49 percent.
The SOM survey was conducted last fall. The survey was sent to 33,750 people, of whom over 17,000 responded. This corresponds to a response rate of 52 percent.
