Hurricane Melissa hits the Caribbean and is now measured at category five, the highest level on the scale, according to the US National Hurricane and Storm Warning Center (NHC).

Jamaica is warned of "catastrophic flooding" ahead of the hurricane reaching the island nation. According to NHC, the winds and flooding will worsen during the day and into the evening. Some areas are expected to receive a meter of rain.

According to the forecast, the hurricane will hit Jamaica on Tuesday to reach Cuba and the Bahamas on Wednesday.

The hurricane has already affected Haiti where at least three people have died. In the neighboring country Dominican Republic, one person has died and one person is missing. Over 750 homes have also been damaged and more than 3,700 people have been evacuated.

You feel powerless, unable to do anything – just flee and leave everything behind, says 66-year-old Dominican Angelita Francisco to AFP.

For Jamaica, Melissa is the strongest hurricane in modern history to directly affect the country.
