The blue-yellow world stars David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig brought home the Olympic Games gold last summer, but after the adventure in Paris, they have not won any of the two tournaments the pair has played.
In the World Tour final in Qatari Doha, however, Åhman/Hellvig went a long way. The pair came as reigning champions and took four wins out of four possible in the group. The first place meant a direct spot to the semifinal, and there, the stars turned a 0–1 deficit into a 2–1 set win against the Dutchmen Stefan Boermans and Yorick de Groot.
In the final on Saturday evening, the Norwegians Anders Mol and Christian Sørum were waiting. In the first set, Åhman/Hellvig were unrecognizable – Mol/Sørum got nine points on the Swedes' mistakes and won the set with 21–18.
The second set became extremely tight. The Swedes had an early grip, but Mol/Sørum came back. A thrilling ball duel at 19–19 could finally give Åhman/Hellvig a set ball, but the pair could not capitalize on the situation and take the match to a deciding set.
Instead, Mol/Sørum took hold and won the set with 22–20 – and the victory in the World Tour final with 2–0 in sets.
