”The Pride parade is a prohibited gathering... those who participate in an event that the authorities have prohibited commit an offense”, it says in a letter sent to several embassies in Budapest.

”Please make sure that your employees and colleagues are properly informed of these facts”, it says further.

The letter, which AFP has taken part of, is signed by Minister of Justice Bence Tuzson.

The organizers have in turn also sent a letter to the embassies, where they emphasize that the police do not have the right to prohibit the event, which is organized by the city council, and the parade "is neither prohibited nor illegal".

”I urge the Hungarian authorities to allow the Budapest Pride”, writes Ursula von der Leyen on X.

She also wants the authorities to refrain from punishing the organizers or participants.

Several EU politicians have promised to participate in the pride parade, to show their support for human rights and freedoms. Among others, Alice Bah Kuhnke (Green party) will travel to Budapest.
