If the constitutional amendment passes, it would effectively make it impossible for former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to return to office in the future, The Guardian reports.
The newly elected Prime Minister Péter Magyar promised during his election campaign to introduce term limits, and his Tisza party recently submitted a proposal to change the law.
"A person who has been prime minister for a total of at least eight years, including any interruptions, may not be elected prime minister," the proposal states, according to the newspaper.
Viktor Orbán has been Prime Minister for a total of 20 years, spread over several terms.
