The plan is that the new electricity subsidy, which is being introduced due to soaring energy prices as a result of the Iran war, will be paid out in the second half of June.

The memorandum on the proposal that the government has now sent out for consultation states that the support will only be paid to individuals who have an electricity grid agreement. This means that those who live in housing or rental associations with shared electricity - where the association has a single electricity grid agreement and then charges the residents - are not covered.

"Spectacular"

The memorandum mentions which households will receive the electricity subsidy, but it does not address those who will not receive it at all, says Kenny Fredman, head of social policy at Bostadsrätterna.

I think it's remarkable.

There is no exact figure for how many households are affected, but in a survey by the Energy Market Inspectorate, 16 percent responded that they have shared electricity. This could therefore be up to 800,000 of Sweden's total of approximately five million households.

"These households have had just as high costs for electricity as all other households. I don't understand why they should be exempt," says Kenny Fredman.

Wants to see special application

Those who receive the electricity subsidy do not need to do anything to receive the money. It is paid by the Social Insurance Agency. But Kenny Fredman believes that the government could have established a special application procedure for those who have shared electricity.

"There, the property owners could have submitted an application and said, 'We consist only of housing, and we know how much each household has consumed in electricity. You know that because you charge each household for the actual electricity consumption,'" he says.

"But the government doesn't do that; they turn a blind eye."

TT has contacted Minister of Energy and Industry Ebba Busch (KD), who has not responded.
