In total, 1,400 carrier pigeons participated in the competition, which was about getting to northern Jutland from the town of Vejen further south as quickly as possible.
First, a group of 500 older carrier pigeons flew away and they all made it home as they should. But then it was the turn of 900 younger pigeons – and of those, 700 are now missing.
The pigeons are said to have lost their orientation after getting caught between a cold front and a warm front. They are believed to have settled down where they were.
One of the 35 carrier pigeon owners who has been affected is Lasse Lindstrøm from Ålborg. He is badly affected.
When you go and look after the pigeons, you still develop a relationship with them. And then they just don't come home. It's terrible, he says to DR.
