Federal immigration agents are being transferred from operations in the state of Louisiana to Minneapolis, Minnesota, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press on Friday.
About 200 federal agents were previously ordered by the Trump administration to Louisiana to arrest undocumented migrants, but they will now reinforce efforts in Minneapolis. About 2,000 ICE agents are already in the state.
Federal authorities are thus expanding efforts to arrest migrants in Minneapolis who are in the United States illegally, despite appeals from both the mayor of Minneapolis and the governor of Minnesota to scale back the operation.
Evidence sought
Tensions between Minneapolis and Washington, D.C., have continued to escalate after the fatal shooting on Wednesday of Good, who was in his vehicle when ICE agents raided the car.
Minnesota investigators are seeking access to evidence related to the incident, and prosecutors on Friday appealed to the public for help in the investigation. The Trump administration has determined that the investigation into the shooting will be conducted at the federal level.
Homeschooling for a month
The incident also has far-reaching consequences for many schoolchildren and their parents in Minneapolis. Schools have been closed for safety reasons. Minneapolis decided on Friday to offer homeschooling for the next month for students who do not feel safe attending school.
Many migrants have said they do not feel safe dropping their children off at school for fear of being arrested by ICE.
