The previous plans to build a new Nobel Center on Blasieholmen would have meant the demolition of the old Tullhuset from 1876 – something that, among others, the king opposed.
But that never happened and now Tullhuset will instead house Sweden's Museum of the Holocaust.
The red-green leadership of the City of Stockholm has agreed with the museum and the goal is to be able to open in 2029.
– This is a very valuable activity, it is important with this establishment, says Finance Commissioner Karin Wanngård (S).
The City of Stockholm will now make a decision to renovate the property, for "a very important tenant", according to Karin Wanngård. There is no cost estimate yet.
"Security"
Tullhuset was also the place recommended by the museum's own staff. Museum director Katty Hauptman is happy with a location "in the heart of Stockholm":
– This is a day of joy, we work with a dark and difficult history, it is important to have a safe and beautiful place but also a sense of security that this will continue.
Since 2023, Sweden's youngest state museum has been temporarily housed in the same building as Bonniers konsthall in Stockholm. At the same time, the exhibition "Dimensions in testimony" is touring Sweden, where the audience, through advanced video technology and AI, can ask questions to Elisabeth Citrom and Tobias Rawet, both Jewish survivors of the Holocaust, whose answers are pre-recorded.
"In the heart"
Tommy Ringart, chairman of the Association of Holocaust Survivors, is also pleased that the museum now gets its own and larger premises. He sees the location as a manifestation that this is an important part of Sweden's history.
It is also in the heart of Jewish Stockholm with proximity to Raoul Wallenberg's square and the memorial monument at the synagogue with over 8,000 names of murdered relatives of the survivors who came to Sweden after the war.
The association's members also contribute to the development of the museum's collections.
They collect and archive material, I have submitted several boxes from my father who was one of the founders of the association. The museum needs more space.
