As recently as in May, Eder played three matches for Germany in the World Championship and scored one of the goals in the 6–4 victory over Slovakia. In August, he found out that he had a malignant tumor.
I really liked Tobias Eder as a person. He was a lively guy. He competed and was a good hockey player. He was driving in our team in many ways. It's heavy and sad that a person has to leave so early, but I want to remember his smile and him with light in my mind, says Roger Hansson to Aftonbladet.
Hansson, head coach in Rögle, coached Eder when both belonged to Düsseldorf in the German league.
Last season, Eder became German champion with Eisbären Berlin.
"Unfortunately, 'Tobi' did not win his toughest battle. It's impossible to find the right words now," writes Eisbären Berlin.
Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl published a photo of Eder on his Instagram account with the message: "Rest in peace, Tobi."
The German Ice Hockey Association writes in a statement:
"We remember the many fun, beautiful, and special moments we could experience with 'Tobi' and say goodbye with great gratitude for the time we spent together."
"At the same time, our thoughts go to his family, his fiancée, his friends, and teammates, who of course have our full support during these difficult days."
