Wyndham Clark took a solid hold on the US Open as early as Thursday and had a six-stroke lead over a quartet tied for second place before the final round.

Then Clark started to falter.

At last year's US Open at Oakmont, he made headlines by angrily smashing a locker in the locker room after missing the qualifying cutoff.

Now Clark instead got into a confrontation with the crowd at Shinnecock Hills, where many loudly heckled him and cheered his misses during the final round - some to the point that police forced a number of spectators to leave the course, according to media on site.

Scheffler never really got close

World number one Scottie Scheffler, all the more popular with the New York crowd, turned 30 on Sunday and joined Clark on the leaderboard.

But Scheffler, in search of a "career grand slam", never really managed to put pressure on.

However, Sam Burns, the American who started the day seven strokes behind Clark, did. Burns was one stroke behind at his closest and had a chance to catch up at the end, but missed relatively short birdie putts on both the 17th and 18th holes.

Won by one stroke

When Wyndham Clark stepped onto the 18th tee, he knew that par was enough to secure his second major title, having also won the US Open in 2023.

He pulled it off, winning at 4-under after a final-round 73 (+3). Burns finished at 3-under and Tom Kim of South Korea tied for third at 1-under. Scheffler finished at par and tied for fourth.

Ludvig Åberg was one of three players who had the lowest score on Sunday, with a 66. It was enough to take him to +3 overall and tied for 17th place.

The fourth and final major of the year, the British Open, will be played at Royal Birkdale July 16–19.

US Masters: Rory McIlroy, Northern Ireland.

PGA Championship: Aaron Rai, England.

US Open: Wyndham Clark, USA.

Ludvig Åberg has been the best Swede in all three majors, with finishes of 21–4–17.
