The information comes from Kirsti Noem, head of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), in a press release, reports CNN.
A spokesperson for Harvard University tells CNN that they are aware of the press release, but refers to President Alan Garber's statement that they do not "negotiate over their independence and constitutional rights".
DHS accuses Harvard of creating a "hostile environment" for students of Jewish origin. Garber has previously stated that the university has taken strong measures to address anti-Semitism.
The authority's threat comes after President Donald Trump escalated his tone against Harvard, among other things, freezing $2.2 billion in state grants. He has also threatened to revoke the university's tax-exempt status and instead tax it as a political organization. Such a request was sent late on Wednesday to the tax authority IRS, reports several American media outlets.
The dispute between Donald Trump and the prestigious Massachusetts university has been ongoing for several days. On social media, the president has claimed that the university is a "joke" that teaches "hate and nonsense" and employs teachers who are "radical left, idiots, and bird brains".
