The peace plan for Gaza is expected to soon enter its second phase, and includes, among other things, a further withdrawal of Israeli forces and the disarmament of Hamas.
Bassem Naim, who is part of Hamas's politburo, says that the extremist group has the "right to resist" but that it is ready to hold talks about disposing of its weapons in various ways as part of a process towards the establishment of a Palestinian state.
"We can discuss freezing, storing or putting them down," Naim told the AP news agency.
We are open to a comprehensive strategy to avoid further escalations, clashes or explosions.
Further negotiations are expected to be held ahead of phase two of the peace plan. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, among others, has described the second phase as “much more difficult” to implement than the first.
